Twenty Billion Switches

Printing a City With Light

Through an air shower into a hall like a cathedral. Air a thousand times cleaner than a hospital.
It's so quiet. Like it's CONCENTRATING.
A machine the size of a bus fired violet light through lenses at the wafer. “Too small to carve. So we PRINT.”

Chips are made by photolithography: light shines through a patterned mask, shrinks through lenses, and hardens a coating so the pattern can be etched. Print, bake, wash, repeat — dozens of layers, about three months per wafer.

The Company That Bet on Sand

Beyond the orchards: a windowless silver factory glowing at sunrise. Siri knew the name on the gate.
INTEL! The first thinking chip was theirs!
