This is the whole secret of soap! 🧼 A soap molecule has two different ends:
💧 a round head that loves water,
🛢️ a long tail that loves oil and grease.
Oil and water refuse to talk to each other — so soap stands in the middle and holds both hands. A peacemaker, a billion times over!
Water can't clean grease because oil and water don't mix. Soap molecules fix that: water-loving HEAD, oil-loving TAIL. So soap can grab the grease AND hold on to the water at the same time. But how does that actually LIFT the dirt off my hands? Next page! 🐸


That's cleaning, from first principles: soap tails bury themselves in the grease, soap heads face the water, and the grease ends up wrapped in a tiny water-friendly bubble (scientists call it a micelle). Then plain old water washes the wrapped dirt down the drain. Soap doesn't destroy dirt — it gives dirt a raincoat and lets water carry it home.

A "company" is really a century-long chain of small clever choices. Sunlight soap sailed in from 1888; Lifebuoy followed in 1895. In 1933 Lever Brothers set up in India itself, and in 1956 the pieces merged into Hindustan Lever — which even invited ordinary Indians to own a share of it.
