The compass had been quiet for days. Then, near a little black drop on the floor, it began to twitch and spin like mad.

Look around you. The petrol in a scooter, the plastic in your water bottle, the smooth cloth of a sports shirt, the tar on your road — an astonishing number of everyday things all begin as one gloopy black liquid pumped from deep underground. How does ONE drop become SO many things?

One blink she was falling. The next… she stood high on a walkway inside the BIGGEST machine she had ever seen — a city of silver towers by the sea.

Oscar held up a jar of thick, shiny, black goo. "This is crude oil. Some call it black gold. It slept underground for millions of years — made from tiny sea creatures long, long ago."
It's so BLACK… and it smells strong!
Crude oil is called black gold because so many precious things hide inside it. But straight out of the ground it's almost useless — a thick, smelly, black soup. The whole job of a refinery is to un-mix that soup into treasures. And that is a giant puzzle.

Here's the first secret: crude oil is really hundreds of different ingredients mixed together. Big heavy ones and small light ones, all jumbled. To turn it into useful stuff, you don't add anything — you just separate what's already there. But how do you sort a liquid? ☀️

Oscar led her to the tallest tower of all. "THIS is how we sort the soup. We call it the distillation tower. Watch."

At the bottom, a great fire boiled the crude oil until it turned to hot vapour that rushed UP the tower.
Why heat it up so much?

"Because each ingredient turns from vapour back to liquid at its OWN temperature. Heavy ones give up quickly and drip out LOW, where it's hottest. Light ones float up HIGH, where it's cool, before they turn back to liquid."
So the tower sorts them by how high they can climb!
This is the secret of the whole book! 🔥 It's called fractional distillation. Boil the mix into vapour; let it rise up a tall tower that's hot at the bottom and cool at the top. You sort a liquid mix with HEAT and a tall tower. Boil it all to vapour. As the vapour climbs, it cools. Heavy things become liquid again low down (hot); light things climb higher before becoming liquid (cool). Every level of the tower collects a different thing. That's fractional distillation — and it's how one drop becomes many! ✅
