CHAPTER 1

The Riddle Under Your Feet

Three countries solved. Meadow lined up her souvenirs and felt extremely pleased.
Nothing, everything, or a doorway. I've seen all three!
Charlie spun the globe and stopped it on a continent sitting alone in a huge blue ocean.
That one's ENORMOUS. And completely by itself.
Under the lens it was almost as wide as the whole United States — and nearly empty.
All that land. Where is everybody?
Then he set a heavy striped rock on the desk. Red and silver, banded like a sunset.
It's HEAVY. And it's… stripy?
That stone made this book.

Charlie's question for this whole book: Japan had almost nothing. America had almost everything above the ground. This land has extraordinary riches BELOW it — so why does digging up treasure usually make a country poorer, and how did this one avoid it? Don't guess yet. Go and see.

CHAPTER 2 · PART ONE: ARRIVAL

A Country the Size of the Sky

The first thing was not the land. It was the sky — enormous, pale, everywhere at once.
There's more SKY here than anywhere.
A young geologist bounced up from a field vehicle. “Fern. I read rocks. You must be Meadow.”
You read ROCKS?
Best storybooks going. Hop in.
The road ran perfectly straight for hours. No towns. No turns. Just red and gold.
We've driven all morning and seen nobody!
At dusk a mob of kangaroos bounded across the grass, unbothered, going somewhere important.
THEY BOUNCE! Like they're on springs!
And they kept coming: koala, wombat, kookaburra, echidna. Then Fern described the platypus.
A duck-beaver that lays EGGS? You're teasing me.
Isolation makes odd, wonderful things.
Then, suddenly, a bright harbour city — ferries, bridges, beaches, glass towers on blue water.
A whole CITY appeared out of nowhere.
Fern drew the continent in the dust, then pressed pebbles in a thin ring around the rim only.
Everyone lives on the OUTLINE.
About nine in ten of us. Ask yourself why.
That night the stars came out in numbers Meadow had never seen, thick as spilled sugar.
I didn't know there were this many.

First clue: the emptiness is not a mistake. Almost everyone here lives in a narrow green ring around the coast, because that is where the rain falls. The vast red middle is not wasted — it is where the country keeps its treasure. Hold that thought.

CHAPTER 3 · PART TWO: NATURE

The Oldest Ground on Earth

They drove into country shaped like ruins: flat-topped red mesas, cut by deep gorges.
It looks like something GIANT wore out.
Fern turned a slow circle. Not one sharp peak anywhere. Only low hills, rolled smooth.
Where are the mountains?
Gone. We had ours. Time ate them.
Mountains are temporary. Wind and rain take them down, grain by grain, forever.
Mountains are just… slow.
Everything is, if you wait long enough.
In a laboratory Fern showed her a crystal grain smaller than a speck of dust.
That? It's practically nothing.
It's about four billion years old.
Older than almost every rock on the planet. Nearly as old as the Earth itself.
FOUR BILLION. I can't even think that number.
Meadow put her palm flat on the sun-warm stone and went very quiet for a while.
This ground was here before… everything.

Fern set two jars side by side: one dark and crumbly, one pale, thin and sandy.
Ours is the sad one, isn't it.
Young mountains make new soil. We have none.

At sunset a vast sandstone monolith burned orange across the plain. They watched from far off.
It looks like it's lit from inside.
A sacred place. We look, and we leave it be.

Nature dealt this continent a strange hand. It is the oldest, flattest and driest inhabited land on Earth — no young mountains to make fresh soil, and little rain. But being ancient and undisturbed did something else: it gave the rocks billions of years to concentrate metals. The same age that ruined the soil made the treasure.

CHAPTER 4 · PART TWO: NATURE

The Day the World Went Rusty

Fern polished a rock face and it lit up: dazzling stripes of silver metal and deep red.
That's not a rock, that's a SUNSET.
Layer, layer, layer — hundreds of them, each thinner than a fingernail.
Something did this on purpose. What?
Not what. Who. And they were very small.
Two and a half billion years ago: warm seas, orange sky, no plants, no animals. Nothing breathing.
No air I could breathe? At ALL?
Only mats of tiny blue-green microbes in the shallows, quietly making a waste gas.
Waste? What were they throwing away?
Oxygen. The stuff we can't live without.
The oxygen met iron dissolved in the sea. The water turned cloudy red and began to snow.
It's RUSTING. The whole ocean is rusting!
Meadow sat down hard on the red dirt with the stone in her lap and stared at it.
The oldest pollution in history. And it's the treasure.
Next morning: a terraced pit so wide the giant trucks looked like beetles on the ramps.
Those trucks are the size of HOUSES.
That red rock leaves as ore and comes back to the world as steel — beams, rails, cars, bridges.
Everything strong is made of ancient rust.

This is the book's best secret. When the first living things learned to make oxygen, they poisoned their own ocean — and the iron dissolved in that ocean rusted and sank, layer after layer, for hundreds of millions of years. Those layers are today the world's greatest iron mines. The waste of the planet's first life became the skeleton of the modern world.

New word: banded iron 🧲. Microbes made oxygen → sea iron rusted → red layers sank → 2.4 BILLION years later we dig it up and make steel. The rust in my hand is older than bones, leaves, or eyes. I keep touching it.

CHAPTER 5 · PART TWO: NATURE

The Dry Heart and the Green Rim

Fern's rainfall map explained the ring at once: wet edges, huge dry middle.
Oh! The people are just following the RAIN.
City lights, farms and forests all clung to that green rim like frost on a window.
So the country is really a ring.
A ring with a very rich hole in it.
One great slow river system does most of the farming work, and it is asked for a great deal.
One river for all that food? That's a lot to ask.
Some years it barely rains. Dams empty, paddocks go quiet, and everyone counts days.
How do you plan a farm like that?
You plan for the dry years, not the good ones.
Then rare rain arrives — and within weeks the desert floods with flowers and birds.
It was DEAD. Now it's a garden!
It was never dead. Only waiting.
In the forests, fire is part of the deal: many trees regrow straight out of blackened trunks.
The tree just… restarts itself.
Fern opened a woody pod: seeds that only let go after heat. Built for a burning country.
The plants EXPECT it.

This land runs on extremes — long dry spells broken by sudden flood, and fire woven into how the forests live. The plants adapted over millions of years. The people had to learn much faster: store water, plan for the dry years, and treat the good years as borrowed.

💧 Rain only on the rim → 9 in 10 people on the rim. Middle = dry heart. Desert isn't dead, it's WAITING. Fire isn't the end, it's a reset. Lesson: don't plan for the good year. Plan for the dry one.

CHAPTER 6 · PART THREE: HISTORY

The Oldest Story Still Being Told

At dawn by a still river, Fern asked Meadow to put her notebook away and just listen.
Why? I always take notes.
Some things you hear first. Write later.
The First Peoples of this land have lived here for at least sixty-five thousand years.
Sixty-five THOUSAND? Say that again.
Meadow tried to picture it and couldn't. Egypt's pyramids were last week by comparison.
Everything I've studied fits inside the END of that.
On a sheltered rock wall, ochre handprints — a greeting across an unimaginable gap of time.
Someone put their hand right there. Like I did on the rock.
And they shaped this country deliberately: cool, careful fires lit to renew the grass.
They were FARMING the land with fire?
Reading it, and tending it. For millennia.
Early visitors described open grassy country like a park. It was not an accident.
Somebody made it look like that. On purpose.
Their star knowledge mapped seasons and journeys — including the dark shapes between stars.
They used the DARK bits of the sky too!

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have cared for this continent for at least 65,000 years — the oldest continuing cultures on Earth. Their knowledge of fire, water, seasons and stars is real science, tested over an almost unthinkable span of time. Any honest story of this country starts here, and this part of the story is still being written.

CHAPTER 7 · PART THREE: HISTORY

Wool, Gold and a Long Way From Everywhere

Then, a little over two centuries ago, sailing ships arrived from the far side of the world.
That is an unbelievably long way to sail.
The newcomers found the soil poor — but the dry grass suited sheep beautifully.
So the first fortune was… wool?
The country rode on the sheep's back.
In a shearing shed Meadow pushed both hands into a fleece and nearly disappeared.
It's like a CLOUD that needs a haircut.
In the 1850s someone found gold, and the quiet colonies detonated with people.
From everywhere at once!
Ships couldn't come fast enough.
Fern let her pan a trial dish. Three tiny flecks caught the sun and Meadow shrieked.
I'M RICH! …It's worth about a dollar, isn't it.
About that. But the feeling's free.
After the war, a huge mountain scheme: tunnels, dams, power — built by workers from everywhere.
People from how many countries?
Thirty-odd. They stayed and built the rest.
Those families changed the food, the streets and the country's idea of itself.
Four dinners at one table again — like Singapore!
And from the 1960s a new customer appeared, hungry for iron: the country Meadow had visited first.
JAPAN. Japan bought this rock!
And sent back cars. Fair trade.

Notice the pattern. Wool, then gold, then iron — this country has always sold what the ground and the grass could give. Each boom brought people, and the people built the towns, schools and rules that outlasted the boom. The lasting wealth was never the gold. It was what got built while the gold lasted.

CHAPTER 8 · PART FOUR: SCIENCE MEETS SOCIETY

Machines That Move Mountains

At the mine Meadow stood beside one truck wheel. It was three times her height.
I could LIVE in this tyre.
First, though, science: a drill lifts a long core of rock, read like a barcode of the ground.
You have to know where it is before you dig.
Fern read the core with a hand lens while a screen drew the ore body in colour, underground.
You can SEE the shape of it down there?
Geology is x-ray vision, slowly.
Then the moving: ore trains so long Meadow lost count of the wagons before they ended.
It goes past the HORIZON.
In a cool bright room in a city far away, engineers watched the desert on screens.
But the mine is a thousand kilometres from here!
The trucks below rolled with nobody inside them, guided from that distant room.
Driverless. In the middle of the DESERT.
Distance made us very good at remote control.
At the coast, conveyors fed neat red mountains that fed waiting ships.
It's one long conveyor belt — desert to ship!
A loaded ship swung out toward open water and Meadow suddenly went rigid, pointing.
That's going to become CARS. And rails. And buildings!
Now you're reading the world properly.

Having ore is not the same as selling ore. Rock is heavy and worth little per tonne, so the country had to become extraordinarily good at moving mountains cheaply: geology to find it, railways and ports to shift it, and remote-controlled machines to run it from a thousand kilometres away. The mine is the easy part. The logistics are the miracle.

Find it (geology 🔬) → dig it → train it → ship it. Driverless trucks run from a control room 1,000+ km away. Ore is cheap per tonne, so EVERY step must be cheap. Callback: Singapore's containers — same lesson, different box.

CHAPTER 9 · PART FOUR: SCIENCE MEETS SOCIETY

Farming a Soil That Was Almost Empty

South and west, the red gave way to golden wheat rolling to a silo on the skyline.
Hang on. You told me the soil was rubbish!
Fern crumbled the pale sandy soil. It ran through her fingers like dry breadcrumbs.
It really is. Ancient soils are worn thin.
So we found out exactly what was missing.
Two identical pots: one plant pale and stunted, one tall and green. The difference was a trace.
A TRACE? Like a pinch?
A pinch of zinc. Or copper. That's all.
Once the missing pinches were known, they could be added — and dead country came alive.
Whole regions unlocked by a teaspoon of chemistry.
And the scarce water is guarded: stubble left standing, seed drilled straight through it.
You don't even plough it?
Ploughing loses moisture. We stopped.
The result came up past Meadow's waist, heavy-headed, in a place with barely any rain.
This is a DRY country. And it's feeding people.
Grain, fruit, meat and wool sail out to feed cities far away across the sea.
Poor soil. Huge exports. That shouldn't work!

This country farms one of the oldest, thinnest soils on Earth — and exports food to the world. Science made the difference: finding the tiny missing nutrients, then changing how the land is worked so precious moisture stays in it. A shortage answered with science stops being a shortage. Singapore said the same about water.

Soil missing TRACE elements (zinc, copper) → add a pinch → land wakes up 🌾. Stop ploughing → keep moisture. Same idea as Singapore's four taps: can't get more, so get cleverer. Science turns 'poor' into 'productive'.

CHAPTER 10 · PART FOUR: SCIENCE MEETS SOCIETY

The Inventions of Distance

One lit window on an enormous dark plain. The nearest neighbour was an hour away. Or three.
What if someone gets sick out here?
So the doctor comes by air. A flying medical service has served the outback since 1928.
An ambulance with WINGS.
And to call for it, families once used a radio powered by pedalling like a bicycle.
You PEDALLED to make a phone call!
Distance makes you inventive.
Then Fern drove her to a giant dish in a paddock, listening to the sky.
Sheep. And a space telescope. Together.
Astronomers had a problem: faint signals arriving smeared and echoing. So they solved it with maths.
What's that got to do with anything?
Wait for it.
Out on red earth, rows of solar panels drank the fiercest sunshine on the planet.
The empty middle is a power station!
And in the suburbs, roof after roof after roof, quietly making electricity.
Nearly every house! It's a habit here.
Another lab here taught deaf children to hear, with a device that speaks straight to the nerve.
That's the best invention I've ever heard of.
And it started as one stubborn question.

Being far away from everyone is expensive — so this country kept inventing its way around distance: medicine by aeroplane, school by radio, and radio-astronomy maths that ended up inside wireless internet. Add the strongest sunshine of any continent and a national habit of putting panels on roofs. A problem you cannot escape becomes the thing you get best at.

CHAPTER 11 · PART FOUR: SCIENCE MEETS SOCIETY

The Trap Called Easy Money

On a ridge at sunset a familiar voice said, “Well? Has it been too easy?”
CHARLIE! You always turn up on a cliff.
He drew a chest of treasure — then drew a chain from it to a small boat, and said nothing.
Treasure that's also an ANCHOR. That's mean.
Fern explained: prices soar, everyone digs, then prices fall and towns go quiet.
So the good years hide the bad ones coming.
What keeps a country out of it, said Fern, is unglamorous: honest courts and steady rules.
Rules again! Singapore said that too.
Boring. Load-bearing.
Then she showed a model: part of the ore money diverted, before anyone could spend it.
You take some off the top and LOCK it.
Every worker's pay puts a slice into savings automatically. It grows for forty years.
So the boom pays for people who aren't born yet.
And some of it becomes universities, hospitals and laboratories — treasure you can't dig up.
Turn the mine into SCHOOLS. That's the answer, isn't it.
Meadow wrote furiously while the sun went down, and Charlie let her finish.
Rules, savings, schools. The ore is just the START.

The defences are unexciting and difficult — honest rules everyone obeys, saving part of the windfall by law, and spending it on schools and science. The ground gives you one chance. What you build with it is the real wealth.

The Hidden Connections

On a high ridge at golden hour, Fern showed her mine, railway, port and city — all at once.
I can see the whole machine from here.
Meadow closed her eyes and ran the chain backwards, link by link, all the way down.
Microbes. Rust. Rock. Trains. Ships. Steel. Schools.

Then it landed, and she nearly fell over with the size of it.
The FIRST LIFE ON EARTH paid for those universities!
Fern nodded. Dig AND think. One pays today; the other pays when the digging stops.
You need both hands.
And none of it was one person. Geologists, drivers, teachers, nurses, farmers, engineers.
No single hero. A CHAIN. Again!
But she also saw the fragile parts: the reef, the rivers, the old thin soil, the fire seasons.
It's rich AND delicate at the same time.
Her notebook was red-dusted and nearly full. She wrote the last clue slowly.
Everything's connected to everything. Obviously.

CHAPTER 13 · WHAT LASTS

The Verandah at the End of the World

The road ended at a shaded verandah above golden paddocks, and a familiar chuckle.
WARREN! You always find the best porch.
Charlie strolled up the steps tapping his glasses, entirely unrepentant.
He sent me to the other side of the WORLD!
Spins a globe, asks one sly thing, then naps.
Warren counted it off on his fingers, slow and warm, the way he always does.
So he asked why buried treasure usually ruins a country.
And off you went — rust, rails, ships, schools.
They watched the light go while Warren said the part he had been saving.
Say the important bit. I'll write it down.
Anyone can spend a mine. Few can plant one.

Charlie turned an hourglass upside down on the rail and asked his last question.
Invert it. Don't ask what made this country rich.
Ask what could make it poor again.
Then Warren went and watered a young tree in the last of the light, unhurried.
It won't be big for years and years.
That's rather the point of planting it.
At dawn Fern pressed a small banded stone into her hand and closed her fingers over it.
It's the whole book in one rock.
Then you've been paying attention.
The archway of red stone opened. Meadow stepped through with dust on her shoes.
Bye, oldest ground on Earth!

Japan had nothing. America had everything. An island had only a location. This continent had the ground itself — and had to learn what to do with it. But the compass swings north now, to a place where the mountains are the youngest and highest on Earth instead of the oldest and lowest: a land folded into the roof of the world, where two continents are still crashing into each other, and where the greatest treasure pours downhill every single day without anyone catching it. What happens to a nation that grows straight up?
