CHAPTER 1 · PART ONE: ARRIVAL

The Country That Would Not Fit on the Desk

Sixteen souvenirs now. The newest was a silver coin from the country with the savings jar.
Charlie spun the globe and stopped it on a country shaped like a ribbon.
It's so THIN!
Four thousand three hundred kilometres long. Barely a hundred wide.
He unrolled a long paper strip across the desk. Meadow had to hold the far end.
That's ONE country?
From the driest desert on Earth to walls of ice.
Then a photograph of blue ice standing in still water — taken in the same country.
And copper-coloured threads ran out of that thin country to every city on the globe.
Charlie left three things behind: a coil of wire, a charger, a small motor.

Charlie's question for this whole book: One country holds the driest desert on Earth, walls of glacier ice, the clearest night sky anyone has found, and about a quarter of the world's copper. CHAPTER 2 · PART ONE: ARRIVAL

Mountains at the End of Every Street

In the capital, every street ended in a wall of snowy mountains. Every single one.
A geologist was waiting on the plaza with a rock hammer in her hand.
Are you my guide?
Valentina. I read rocks. And sometimes the sky.
The underground was cool and clean, and the platform walls were painted like a gallery.
In the old market hall: silver fish on ice, and fruit stacked in crates to the roof.
Lunch was hot pastry, dark grapes and juice, and Meadow had two of everything.
Then a coastal city stacked up the hills in every colour, with little railways climbing it.
The stairways were paintings. People had made art out of the way home.
At night the city glowed, and above it the mountains blocked out half the stars.
WORTH REMEMBERING

The shape is the first fact about this country: about 4,300 km from top to bottom and only 177 km wide on average. Nineteen and a half million people live along it, and roughly four in ten of them live in and around one city — a valley cupped between a mountain wall and the sea.

CHAPTER 3 · PART TWO: NATURE

The Place Where It Does Not Rain

North they went, until the plants stopped, and then kept going for hours more.
Valentina poured a handful of dust out of her fist. It ran like flour.
Nothing GROWS here?
Some stations here have never recorded a drop of rain.
The ground was cracked salt crust, baked hard, glittering faintly with minerals.
At the coast, fog rolls in off a cold sea — and people hang nets to drink it.
Valentina drew why: a cold current along the coast, and a mountain wall stealing the rain.
At sunset the bare rock went rose and gold, like a landscape on another planet.
At dawn, steam roared out of the ground, because there is fire not far below.
And on a turquoise lagoon in the middle of the salt: flamingos, standing about calmly.
Meadow wrote down the strangest sentence of the book so far.
The driest place on Earth is also the sunniest. That's not a coincidence.

Here is why it is so dry. A cold ocean current runs up this coast from the far south, and cold water makes fog, not rain. Behind that, the Andes block every cloud coming from the east. Parts of this desert average under 1 mm of rain a year, some spots have gone decades without measurable rain, and it has been arid for millions of years. The same clear dry air gives this desert the strongest sunlight measured anywhere on Earth.

🏜️ NO RAIN. Some weather stations have never measured any. Cold sea = fog not rain, and the Andes eat the clouds. AND the same dryness = the strongest sunshine on the planet ☀️. Nature gave them a problem and the answer to it in the SAME parcel. (Bangladesh: the flood brought the soil. SAME TRICK.)

CHAPTER 4 · PART TWO: NATURE

The Other End of the Ribbon

They flew south for hours, and the country stayed the same narrow shape the whole way.
Then granite towers, and grass the colour of straw, and wind that leaned on you.
And a wall of blue ice standing in a cold lake, cracking and dropping pieces of itself.
Valentina had to shout over the wind. The rain the desert never gets lands here.
Same country?!
Same country. The clouds simply run out of room.
Guanacos watched them from the steppe, unbothered, chewing.
Further south the land shatters into fjords and islands and endless soft rain.
And all the way along runs a line of volcanoes, quietly steaming above the forests.
Valentina explained the engine: the sea floor dives under the continent, right offshore.

This ribbon is stretched across a seam. Just off the coast, the Pacific sea floor slides beneath South America — which is why the country has more than 2,000 volcanoes with about 90 of them active, why the highest volcano on Earth (6,893 m) stands on its border, and why the ice fields of the far south are the largest ice outside the polar regions in the southern half of the world, about 12,000 square kilometres. One process built the mountains, the volcanoes, the earthquakes and the copper.

CHAPTER 5 · PART THREE: HISTORY

The Desert That Was Worth More Than Gold

In the middle of the driest nothing stood a town — wooden, tidy, and completely empty.
Valentina held up a crumbly pale rock. Once, the world queued for this.
It's just rock!
It's nitrate. It fed crops and filled the treasury.
The town had a theatre with rows of seats, and a bandstand, out here, for the workers.
Rails still run into the sand, going nowhere, from when this desert was the richest place around.
Sailing ships came from Europe for sacks of white crystals dug out of the dry ground.
Then, in a laboratory far away, chemists learned to pull nitrogen straight out of the air.
And within a generation the desert towns were quiet, and the sacks stopped moving.
THE STORY IN TIME
before 1500

Mapuche and other peoples farm, weave and trade; the Inca push south and are halted.

1541–1810

Spanish rule in the centre; the Mapuche keep their land south of the Biobío for 300 years.

1818

Independence.

1880s–1920s

Atacama nitrate boom: taxes on saltpetre pay for around half of the government.

1909–1913

German chemists learn to make nitrogen fertiliser from air. The desert's monopoly ends.

1930s–1950s

The nitrate towns empty. Copper becomes the country's income instead.

1971

Congress votes unanimously to make the great copper mines national property.

1973–1990

A coup, then seventeen years of dictatorship.

1988

Fifty-six people in every hundred vote 'No', and the country changes hands with pencils.

1990–today

Fruit, salmon, wine, telescopes, solar and lithium — and copper still about half of exports.

WORTH REMEMBERING

For forty years this desert had a world monopoly. Nitrate — saltpetre — made fertiliser and explosives, and taxes on it paid roughly half of all government revenue around 1900. Then between 1909 and 1913 chemists in Germany worked out how to make nitrogen fertiliser out of thin air, and the monopoly simply evaporated. The towns were abandoned; two of them are now World Heritage sites. A single invention somewhere else can close an industry here.

💰 They got RICH on desert rock (nitrate) — half the government's money! Then GERMANY (my Book 13!) learned to make it out of AIR and the towns emptied. Someone else's laboratory ended their boom. ⚠️ Nobody in those towns could have seen it coming. Write that down twice.

CHAPTER 6 · PART THREE: HISTORY

Copper, and a Country Changed With Pencils

So they turned to the other thing in the rock, and dug the largest holes on Earth.
The trucks are the size of houses. One tyre is taller than a doorway.
In 1971 the whole Congress voted, with nobody against, to make the big mines national.
Charlie was on a garden wall, and did not let her skip the next part.
Two years later the country lost its democracy. For seventeen years. You do not get only the cheerful pages.
A long wall of carved names stands in the capital, with fresh flowers along its foot.
Then, in 1988, the whole thing turned on a table, a pencil and a folded paper.
The campaign to end it was a rainbow and a song, and it won by fifty-six to forty-four.
By 1990 the flag went up over an elected government again, and the counting held.
WORTH REMEMBERING

This is the honest beat of the book. From 1973 to 1990 the country was ruled by a dictatorship; later truth commissions recorded more than 3,000 people killed or made to disappear and tens of thousands imprisoned. In 1988 the country was asked to vote yes or no on continuing, and 56% voted No. Power changed hands, peacefully, on counted ballots. Democracy was not returned to them — they went and got it, with pencils.

Why the World Needs This Rock

Up close the ore is beautiful: green and turquoise streaks with metal threaded through it.
Then Valentina wound wire round a nail, touched a battery, and paperclips leapt up.
I MADE A MAGNET!
You made a motor's ancestor. That is all copper does — carry.
Electricity moves through copper more easily than through almost anything else on Earth.
So the rock is crushed, concentrated, melted and refined until it is nearly pure metal.
It leaves as shining sheets, stacked on pallets, bound for factories everywhere.
Every motor, wire, charger, turbine and battery pack in your life has some of it inside.

In the driest desert, the mines now drink seawater — cleaned, then pumped thousands of metres uphill.
And in 2010 a narrow steel capsule brought thirty-three miners up from 700 metres down.

Copper conducts electricity better than any common metal except silver, and it does not care how often you bend it — so the electric world is wired with it. This country mines about a quarter of the world's copper and holds the largest known reserves; the biggest copper mine on Earth is here, and the biggest open pit ever dug is here. An ordinary car carries roughly 20 kg of copper; an electric one carries three to four times that.

🧲 Wire + nail + battery = MAGNET. That's the whole secret: copper CARRIES electricity better than nearly anything. ¼ of the world's copper is from here. An electric car needs 3-4× the copper of a normal one. ⛏️ 2010: 33 miners, 700 m down, 69 days, ALL came up. And the mines drink the SEA now, pumped uphill.

CHAPTER 8 · PART FOUR: SCIENCE MEETS SOCIETY

How to Live on a Floor That Moves

In a green field by the sea stood a stone wall with no roof, and grass along its top.
Valentina showed her the physics: two blocks of rock gripping, bending, storing energy.
Then a shaking table, a model tower, and little rubber pads under its feet.
It's WOBBLING but it's not falling!
Exactly. You don't fight the shake. You let it sway.
Real buildings sit on real versions: layered rubber and steel, as tall as a child.
So glass towers stand up in a country that shakes harder than almost anywhere.
Every school yard has a painted circle, and every child has walked to it, many times.
And in coastal towns, painted arrows point up the hill, because the sea comes too.
The morning after a big one, shutters go up and the street gets swept.
Is everyone this calm?
We rewrite the rules after every one. That's the calm.

In 1960 this coast produced the strongest earthquake ever recorded anywhere: magnitude 9.5. Its wave crossed the whole Pacific and reached Japan a day later. Engineers studied what stood and what did not, and the building rules were rewritten — again and again. In 2010 a magnitude 8.8 struck: it released around 500 times more energy than the magnitude 7.0 that hit Haiti the same year, and it killed 525 people, while that smaller quake killed well over a hundred thousand. The difference was not the ground — it was the rules.

CHAPTER 9 · PART FOUR: SCIENCE MEETS SOCIETY

The Best Sky in the World

On a bare mountain above a sea of cloud stood white domes, opening at dusk like eyes.
In the control room, Valentina explained why the world builds them HERE.
Nowhere else is this dry, this high, this still, this dark.
Water in the air smudges starlight. Here there is almost none, and the cloud sits below.
At five thousand metres, dozens of dishes listen for radio whispers from cold gas and dust.
And then night came properly, and Meadow forgot to write anything down.
She had never seen the Milky Way as a bright, dusty, three-dimensional river before.
...oh.
In a spotless hall, a honeycomb of mirror segments waited for the largest telescope ever built.
The pictures fly out down fibre cables to astronomers on every continent.
And the villages nearby point their street lamps down, on purpose, to keep the dark.

Telescopes need dry, still, dark, cloud-free air, and this desert has more of it than anywhere. So the world came: an array of 66 dishes at 5,000 m, four 8.2-metre mirrors on a coastal peak, and a telescope with a 39-metre mirror under construction — the largest optical eye ever made. By around 2030, roughly 70% of the world's big-telescope power will be standing in this one desert, along with the engineers, universities and students that follow it.

🔭 THE SKY IS A RESOURCE. Nobody dug it up or planted it — it's just DRY, HIGH, STILL and DARK, and that turns out to be worth billions. ~70% of the world's big telescopes will be here. 🌌 I saw the Milky Way as a RIVER. Villages point their lamps DOWNWARD to protect it. Best rule ever.

CHAPTER 10 · PART FOUR: SCIENCE MEETS SOCIETY

Summer in the Middle of Winter

Back in the green middle of the ribbon: mile after mile of cherry trees, in fruit.
Valentina opened a carton of cherries and asked what month it was at home.
February. It's freezing at home!
Precisely. That is the entire business.
Because the Earth is tilted, this country's summer lands in the northern winter.
So the fruit is picked, chilled within hours, and shipped while the north has none.
And appears in a snowy country in midwinter, in a punnet, as if it were nothing.
In the southern fjords, cold clean water grows salmon — a trick learned from Norway.
And in the dry central valleys, vines, ripened by sun and watered by melting snow.
WORTH REMEMBERING

Being in the southern half of the world used to mean being far from everything — now it is a delivery date. This country is the world's largest exporter of cherries — more than half a million tonnes in a good season, with roughly nine in ten going to China — plus grapes, blueberries and wine (a top-five wine exporter). Salmon are not even native here: farming them was learned from Norway in the 1980s, and this is now the world's second-largest producer. None of that is in the ground: it is a calendar plus a cold chain.

🍒 THE SEASONS ARE UPSIDE DOWN AND THAT IS THE PRODUCT. Their summer = our winter, so their cherries arrive when nobody else has any. Biggest cherry exporter on Earth, ~90% to China. 🐟 And the salmon came from NORWAY (last book!) — not native at all. They imported an industry and made it their own.

Sun, Salt and Batteries

And then the newest thing: the useless desert turning out to be a power station.
Valentina squinted into the glare and did the sums out loud.
Nothing grows here. But nothing shades a panel here either.
Out on the salt flat, turquoise ponds sit in enormous geometric squares.
The sun does the work: it evaporates the brine and leaves the lithium behind.
Lithium goes into batteries, and copper wires them together. Both are under this desert.
Steel towers march the power out of the emptiness toward the cities.
In the wet south, rivers and dams do the same job with falling water instead of light.
And the city glows at night on sunlight collected a thousand kilometres away.

The two things the electric world needs most are copper and lithium, and this desert has both. The country holds the largest known lithium reserves on Earth and produces roughly a quarter of the world's supply, evaporated by sunshine in ponds. That same sunshine, the strongest measured anywhere, has taken solar and wind from almost nothing in 2013 to more than a third of the country's electricity, and the old coal plants are closing. The emptiest land in the country turned out to be the most useful.

CHAPTER 12 · THE BIG PICTURE

What Could Switch It Off

But the reservoir had a pale ring high on its rocks, and the river bed below was dry.
Mines want water. Orchards want water. Cities want water. There is one river.
And in the hot dry summers the plantations burn, hotter each time. Then people replant.
On a wall at golden hour, Valentina was completely straight with her.
We are in the longest drought in a thousand years. Everything here now argues about water.
From the ridge Meadow could see the whole story at once: orchard, panels, pit, dome, sea.

Read the chain slowly. A diving sea floor built mountains, volcanoes, earthquakes and copper; a cold current and a rain shadow made the driest desert and the clearest sky; nitrate made a fortune until a foreign laboratory ended it; copper replaced it; a dictatorship was voted out with pencils; earthquake rules turned a 9.5 country into a place where towers stand; and the upside-down calendar, the sun, the salt and the sky each became an industry. Every single step was a decision about what to do with an accident of geology.

Charlie was on the wall at the top, tapping his glasses, as if he had been there all along.
He turned a copper disc over in his fingers. “Don't ask what made this country rich,” he said. “Ask what could switch it off.”
Running out of water. And leaning on one metal.
Good. One of those is the nitrate story, wearing new clothes.

CHAPTER 13 · WHAT LASTS · COMING HOME

A Ribbon, and What Was Done With It

On a vine-shaded terrace at golden hour, on a wooden bench, sat a familiar old man.
“Look at Charlie,” he chuckled. “Unrolls a paper streamer, asks one sly question, then naps.”
He made me hold the END of it!
He always does something. Then he vanishes.
Then, quietly: “He asked what you build when your luck comes in strange pieces.”
Rules. They built rules. Then the luck was worth something.
And what will you keep, when it's yours?
WHAT MADE IT LAST · the strengths rivals can't copy

🪨 A quarter of the world's copper, and the reserves to follow

The biggest copper mine and the largest known reserves on Earth, plus a state company and a hundred years of mining engineers. The rock cannot be moved to a rival country.

🏗️ Buildings and children who expect to shake

Sixty-five years of rewriting the code after every big earthquake, plus drills everybody has walked. In 2010 a magnitude 8.8 killed 525 people while a far smaller quake elsewhere killed over a hundred thousand.

🔭 A sky no amount of money can buy

Dry, still, dark air above the cloud line. By about 2030 roughly seventy percent of the world's big-telescope power will stand here — and the scientists, universities and students follow the telescopes.

🍒 Summer delivered in the northern winter

The seasons are upside down, so cherries, grapes and blueberries arrive when the rich half of the world has none. Add cold stores, ports and inspectors and geography becomes a delivery date.

⚠️ THE CRACKS: one metal, and not enough water

Copper and its products are about half of all exports — exactly the fragility that ended the nitrate towns when a German laboratory made their rock obsolete. The country is in its longest drought in a thousand years; mines, orchards and cities draw on the same rivers; and the plantations burn hotter every summer.

At the airport, Valentina pressed a small polished copper disc into her hand.
The plane lifted at dawn, with the last stars still over the volcanoes.
At home, seventeen souvenirs sat in a row, each with a thread of light running out of it.

No single hero. A chain. EVERY time.

No president made this country and no mine did it alone. A diving slab of sea floor, a cold current, a rain shadow, sacks of desert crystals, a foreign laboratory that ended them, a unanimous vote, a wall of names, a pencil in 1988, building codes rewritten after every earthquake, a tilted planet, cold stores, telescope mirrors and evaporating ponds all leaned on each other. Nothing is ever just one cause — and nothing on your desk is just a thing.

➊ Luck is only worth what your rules make it worth. ➋ Boring rules — building codes, drills — save more lives than heroes do. ➌ Someone else's invention can end your best industry, so never depend on one thing. ➍ A problem and its answer often arrive in the same parcel (no rain = huge sun). ➎ You can own a resource nobody can dig up: the dark, dry sky. ➏ People can take their country back by counting. ➐ No single hero. A chain. Again.

EVERY COUNTRY HIDES A STORY.

Japan had nothing. America had everything. An island had a doorway. A continent had the ground. Nepal had height. Switzerland had empty mountains. A peninsula had only its people. A delta had no ground at all. A dry country kept its head. A green island called its children home. One sent its soldiers away. One changed a single rule and fed the world. One sold the machines that build the factories. One built itself out of code. One was given up on and did the fastest good in history. One found oil and saved almost all of it. And this one was a ribbon between a desert and the ice, and turned four odd pieces of luck into rules that hold. But every country in this book so far has had banks, branches, cashiers, queues — the plumbing of money, built over centuries out of stone and paper. So now the compass swings to East Africa, to a country of highlands, tea, rift valleys and long-distance runners, where most people in 2005 had no bank account at all and no branch within a day's walk. Instead of building thousands of banks, they put the whole economy onto the plainest mobile phone you have ever seen — and the rest of the world is still trying to catch up. What happens when a country skips a step everybody else thought was compulsory?
