Shops here really do close on Sundays, by law. Workers get around six weeks of paid holiday and work fewer hours a year than almost anyone in the rich world. By every simple rule that should make a country poor. It is the third-largest exporter on Earth.
Day one. ⏰ Trains on time. 🥖 THIRTY kinds of bread. Everything SHUT on Sunday, by LAW. Six weeks holiday. Fewer working hours than nearly anywhere. And they're still one of the top 3 exporters?? Something here doesn't add up. FIND IT.











Here is the hand: coal and iron ore lying close together, big navigable rivers running to the sea, deep forests and good farmland — and no mountains or oceans at the edges. Everything a workshop needs, in a place anyone can walk into. That second fact shaped the next thousand years.

Being divided was a disaster for power and a gift for learning. Because no single ruler could concentrate everything in one capital, universities, printers, workshops and orchestras were scattered across hundreds of small places — and they competed. That is why, even today, the excellent workshop is usually in a small town nobody has heard of.
🧩 300+ tiny states, no capital, no single boss. Bad for armies. AMAZING for schools — every little court built its own university and theatre to show off. Competition between HUNDREDS of small places. Ireland's free school came from a decision. This came from a MESS.

Between about 1870 and 1900 this became the world's laboratory: synthetic dyes, fertiliser, the internal combustion engine, the electric motor, aspirin, X-rays. Not because of one genius, but because hundreds of universities and thousands of workshops were already there, arguing with each other.
🧪 Dyes → chemistry → fertiliser, medicines, plastics. 🔧 Also engines and electric motors. Switzerland did dyes→medicine too but SMALL and precious. Here it went BIG and heavy. Same starting point, different size. (Because they HAVE coal and rivers!)






Notice the order. The customs union came in 1834, the railways followed, and the country itself only arrived in 1871. The economy was stitched together before the nation was. Being late meant it became one country already carrying a habit of precision — and already very good at making things.
🚂 They joined up their MONEY and their RAILWAYS before they joined up their COUNTRY. Only became one nation in 1871 — younger than the USA! And they arrived already good at making things. Order matters.



Twice in thirty years, wars that began here spread across the world. In between, prices rose so fast that money became waste paper and ordinary families lost everything they had saved. Frightened, humiliated people are the easiest people in the world to lie to. That is the part worth remembering.
💔 Two world wars started here. And in between, money became WORTHLESS — a barrow of cash for one loaf. Charlie says scared + ashamed people are easy to lie to. I think that's the most important sentence in the whole book so far.






Here is the thing that makes this chapter belong in a book about how countries work. Most countries, after doing something terrible, quietly look away. This one decided to do the opposite: to teach it, mark it, and never stop. The little brass squares in the pavements carry the names of people taken from those exact houses — thousands of them, in hundreds of towns. Remembering on purpose is not weakness — it is one of the hardest, bravest things a country can do.
🕯️ Today was hard and I want to write it properly. They did something monstrous. They teach it — in every school, by law — instead of hiding it. There are little brass squares in the pavement outside the actual houses. Clara says a country that faces its worst thing is safer than one that pretends. I believe her.








Within about twenty years of 1945 this was one of the richest economies in the world again — people called it a miracle, though it was mostly rubble-clearing, machine tools and very hard work. Then in 1990 the rich half took on the poor half, and paid for the repair for thirty years.
🧱 Rebuilt from rubble by CLEANING BRICKS ONE BY ONE. Then split in two by a wall for 40 years. 1989 the wall opens, 1990 one country again — and the rich half paid to fix the poor half for THIRTY YEARS. Nobody calls that a miracle. It's just the bill.







Here is the answer to Charlie's two gears. If you sell cheap things, whoever is cheaper wins. If you sell the machine that MAKES the thing — accurate to a thousandth of a millimetre, that runs for thirty years, with an engineer who arrives when it breaks — the price stops being the point. Half the world's factories are built out of machines from here.
⚙️ THE ANSWER!! They don't sell the cheap thing — they sell THE MACHINE THAT MAKES IT. Nobody buys a jet-engine cutter because it's cheap. You buy the one that's EXACT and gets fixed fast. Being expensive doesn't matter if you're the only one who can do it.








Two quiet machines run this country. The apprenticeship — about half of young people learn a trade in a real workplace while still at school, so skill is normal, not second-best. And the Mittelstand: thousands of mid-sized, often family-owned firms in small towns, each a world leader in one narrow thing. Workers sit on the boards by law, which is why these firms think in decades.
🔧 HALF of teenagers learn a trade by DOING it (Switzerland does this too!). 🏭 The best firms are in VILLAGES, family-owned, world champion at one weird specific thing nobody's heard of. Workers sit on the BOARD. So they plan in decades, not months.






Read the chain slowly. Coal and iron together made a workshop; no natural borders made it dangerous; three hundred small states scattered universities and crafts everywhere; chemistry and engines made it Europe's laboratory; catastrophe and rebuilding left a habit of exactness and a decision to remember; and apprenticeships plus village champions turned all of it into machines nobody else can make.


⚠️ THE CRACKS, straight from Clara: energy costs a fortune now · the country is getting old · slow on computers · the whole car industry has to swap its engine. Charlie: what would make it ORDINARY? Being late. Being expensive AND ordinary is the worst place to stand.



Precision measured in thousandths of a millimetre, in firms that have done one thing for a century. You cannot order that skill in; you have to grow it.
About half of young people train in a workshop while still at school, so good hands are normal here. That takes a generation to copy.
Thousands of family firms that lead one narrow world market, with workers on the board — so the plan is for the grandchildren, not the quarter.
Taught in every school, marked in the pavements, never quietly filed away. A society honest about the past is harder to fool in the future.
Cheap energy vanished and has not come back. There are more people retiring than arriving to replace them. It was slow to take computers seriously, and its greatest industry must now rebuild the engine it is famous for. Being expensive only works while you are also irreplaceable.




No chancellor made this country good at machines and no company did it alone. Coal beside iron, rivers pointing at the sea, three hundred squabbling little states, laboratories, rubble cleaned brick by brick, workshops in villages and a decision to remember all leaned on each other. Nothing is ever just one cause — and nothing on your desk is just a thing.
➊ If you can't be cheapest, be irreplaceable. ➋ Sell the machine that makes the thing, not the thing. ➌ Being scattered and divided can grow more schools than being united does. ➍ Treat skilled hands as a real career and you get a country that can build anything. ➎ Own the boring specialist niche nobody else wants. ➏ A country that teaches its worst chapter is stronger, not weaker. ➐ No single hero. A chain. Again.

Japan had nothing. America had everything. An island had a doorway. A continent had the ground. Nepal had height. Switzerland had empty mountains. A peninsula had only its people. A delta had no ground at all. A dry country kept its head. A green island called its children home. One sent its soldiers away. One changed a single rule and fed the world. And this one sold the machines that build everybody else's factories. But every single one of them needed something enormous to work with — coal, or harbours, or millions of people. So now the compass swings north, to a tiny country on a cold Baltic shore with barely more than a million people, no oil, no coal and almost no factories, which walked out of a collapsing empire in 1991 with nothing but forests, ruins and a phone system that barely worked. Instead of building factories, it built a COUNTRY out of software — where you can vote, sign papers and start a business from a laptop in about ten minutes. Can a nation really be made of code?
