A curious traveller, two wise mentors, and a black volcanic island sitting on the crack where two continents pull apart — no coal, no oil, hardly a tree, one of the poorest places in Europe a lifetime ago, and now warmed, lit and fed by the very fire underneath it.









Charlie's question for this whole book: in 1900 this was one of the poorest countries in Europe — about seventy-eight thousand people, no coal, no oil, hardly a tree, thin soil on cold rock. It sits on the crack where two continents pull apart, so it shakes, erupts and buries itself in ash. Today it is one of the richest countries on Earth, and almost every house on it is heated by that same underground fire. What happens when a country stops fighting the thing that should destroy it and plugs a pipe into it instead?

About 390,000 people live here — fewer than in many single city districts — and roughly nine houses in every ten are heated with hot water pumped out of the ground. Essentially all the electricity comes from falling water and hot rock: about seventy parts hydro, thirty parts geothermal. Nobody here burns anything to stay warm.
Day one. ♨️ STEAM COMES OUT OF THE PAVEMENT. The hot tap smells of eggs because it's straight from the ground. Outdoor pool IN THE SNOW 🏊❄️. 390,000 people = smaller than Estonia! And a bookshop bigger than my school.









This island is the one place on Earth where the Mid-Atlantic Ridge — the great seam where two plates pull apart — climbs right out of the sea into the daylight. The gap widens by roughly two centimetres a year, about the width of your thumb, and the island has around thirty active volcanic systems with an eruption somewhere about every four or five years. The danger and the heating bill come from exactly the same fact.
🌋 I STOOD IN THE CRACK BETWEEN TWO CONTINENTS. They pull apart 2cm a year (thumb width). ~30 volcano systems, an eruption every 4-5 years. Nepal was made by plates CRASHING. This one is made by plates LETTING GO. Opposite move, same machine.








Ice and fire sit on top of one another here. Vatnajökull is Europe's largest ice cap, and there are active volcanoes underneath it. When one erupts, the meltwater bursts out in a flood called a jökulhlaup — in 1996 one of them carried away bridges on the main ring road, and their bent girders are still standing on the sand as a memorial. Then the island rebuilt the road, because it always does.
🧊🔥 GLACIERS SITTING ON VOLCANOES. The ice has black ash stripes in it = a diary of every eruption. When a volcano melts its own glacier you get a jökulhlaup — a flood that eats BRIDGES. They keep the bent girders as a monument instead of hiding them. I like that.








Here is the hand: a young volcanic island on a spreading crack, glaciers over a tenth of it, thin soil, no coal, no oil and, within a few centuries of settlement, almost no woodland left. Birch once covered perhaps a quarter of the land; today under two per cent is forest. The one asset was the cold, fish-rich sea. Everything else this country now has, it had to make out of heat, water and rules.

Their assembly, the Alþingi, began in 930 and is usually called the oldest parliament still meeting anywhere. And the long dark winters made a nation of readers: literacy has been close to universal here for two centuries, children still read eight-hundred-year-old sagas in the modern language, and at Christmas the whole country gives each other books — the Jólabókaflóð, the Christmas book flood.
📚 A parliament since the year 930. On a plain INSIDE the crack. And the winters are so long and dark that everyone reads — they still read 800-year-old books in today's language, and at Christmas they give each other BOOKS. Estonia kept its language in songs. This one kept it in stories.






The Laki eruption of 1783–84 is one of the worst disasters in this whole series: gas and ash killed most of the livestock, and the famine that followed — the Mist Hardships — killed roughly a fifth of the country's people. The haze dimmed summers across Europe. This island was, by any measure anyone used, a place with no future. It is now among the wealthiest and longest-living countries on Earth.
💔 1783: the ground opens for MONTHS. Poison gas kills the animals, then hunger kills about a FIFTH of everybody. Then a century so hard that another fifth emigrated. Charlie: 'watch what they do next.' He said that in Bangladesh too. It's his favourite sentence and it's never once been wrong.








Between 1958 and 1976 this country pushed its fishing limit from 4 nautical miles to 200, in three confrontations known as the Cod Wars, using patrol boats and net-cutters against a far bigger navy — and won. Then it did the rarer thing: it set catch limits from yearly scientific surveys and handed out tradable quota shares. Fish and fish products are still around four out of every ten pounds' worth of goods it sells abroad, and the cod stock is healthy. Owning a sea is politics. Keeping it full is arithmetic.
🐟 THE COD WARS: a country with NO ARMY beat a real navy three times, mostly with a hook that cut nets. Then the clever bit — count the fish first, then decide how many you may catch, and give people a SHARE they own so they want it to last. Botswana's rule-before-the-money, at sea!







In 2008 the banks here collapsed with debts roughly ten times the country's yearly output — one of the biggest financial failures ever, relative to size. Iceland did something unusual: it let the banks fail, protected ordinary savers at home, and put some bankers in prison. Then in 2010 the Eyjafjallajökull ash cloud cancelled about 100,000 flights and stranded some 10 million passengers — and accidentally advertised the island to the planet. Visitors rose from about 500,000 in 2010 to about 2.3 million by 2018.
💥 2008: banks 10x BIGGER than the country. All gone in a week. They let them fail and some bankers went to PRISON — that almost never happens. 🌋 2010: the ash cloud stops Europe's planes... and then everyone wants to come and SEE the volcano. The disaster became the advert. 😳











The trick is called cascading: use the same heat again and again on the way down. Steam makes electricity; the warm water left over heats about nine homes in ten; cooler water grows vegetables in greenhouses and melts snow off pavements; what remains fills more than a hundred public swimming pools. Because the power is cheap and clean, aluminium smelters came — the island makes roughly 800,000 tonnes of aluminium a year and uses more electricity per person than any other country on Earth. It burns nothing to do it.
♨️ THE CASCADE — the SAME heat used five times: ⚡electricity → 🏠house heating → 🍅greenhouse tomatoes → 🛣️melting snow off pavements → 🏊swimming pools. And bread baked in HOT SAND, no fuel, 24 hours. Japan had no oil and got clever about ENERGY. Same idea, opposite ground.










In 1973 the town of Heimaey — about 5,300 people — was evacuated overnight in the fishing fleet, and then Icelanders pumped millions of tonnes of sea water onto an advancing lava front to cool and steer it. It worked: the harbour was saved, and the new lava made it better sheltered than before. Surtsey, a whole new island, rose out of the sea nearby in 1963 and is kept as a laboratory. And at Hellisheiði, the CarbFix project injects carbon dioxide dissolved in water into basalt, where most of it turns into stone in under two years.
🌊🔥 THEY COOLED A LAVA FLOW WITH THE SEA. On purpose. With pumps. And it worked, and the harbour came out BETTER. Also: a brand new island (1963) that only scientists may land on. Also: they turn CO₂ into STONE by pumping it into the lava. The volcano is now doing chores. 🙃




Read the chain slowly. A crack between two continents rose out of the sea and made an island of fire under ice; the woods went, the soil thinned, and famine nearly emptied it; a cold rich sea was the only wealth, so the nation won its fishing grounds and then learned to count the catch; the heat that threatened it was piped into every house; cheap clean power drew industry; and an ash cloud told the world where the island was. Every single step was a decision, taken by a very small number of people.

Nine houses in ten warmed from the ground, all electricity from water and rock, and the same heat used five times on its way down. Rivals cannot buy the geology — but they can copy the cascade.
Yearly scientific surveys set the limit; tradable shares make the fishermen want the stock to last. Winning the Cod Wars was the easy half.
A parliament since 930, near-universal literacy for two centuries, a language children still read sagas in. In 1975 nine in ten women stopped work for a day; in 1980 the world's first elected woman president was chosen here.
The best-watched ground on Earth, drills everybody knows, lava cooled with sea water and steered with earth walls — and, in 2008, banks allowed to fail and bankers sent to prison.
Fish, aluminium and tourism carry almost everything, and two million visitors a year press hard on 390,000 people and thin moss. The glaciers are shrinking, a town was evacuated by lava in 2023, and a small currency can halve in a week. Small means quick — in both directions.





No president heated this country and no company did it alone. A crack in the sea floor, ice on top of fire, birch woods spent too fast, a famine, sagas read out loud in the dark, better boats, a net-cutter, a fish count, one pipe to one school in 1930, pumps aimed at a lava front, and a volcano nobody could pronounce all leaned on each other. Nothing is ever just one cause — and nothing on your desk is just a thing.

Japan had nothing. America had everything. An island had a doorway. A continent had the ground. Nepal had height. Switzerland had empty mountains. A peninsula had only its people. A delta had no ground at all. A dry country kept its head. A green island called its children home. One sent its soldiers away. One changed a single rule and fed the world. One sold the machines that build the factories. One built itself out of code. One was given up on and did the fastest good in history. One found an ocean of oil and saved almost all of it for its great-grandchildren. And this one sat down on the crack between two continents and piped the fire into its houses. Every book so far has been about what a country was given, and what it decided to do with it. Now the compass swings to the middle of Africa, to a small green country of a thousand steep hills, where in 1994, in a hundred days, people did the very worst thing a country can do to itself. What happens next is the hardest and most astonishing question in this whole series: how do neighbours who have hurt each other choose, deliberately, to live together again — and then build one of the cleanest, safest, most surprising countries on the continent?
