CHAPTER 1 · PART ONE: ARRIVAL

The Toy Car and the Long Line

Twenty-three souvenirs now. Some of them still smelled faintly of somewhere else.
Charlie spun the globe and stopped it on a long horn-shaped country under a very big neighbour.
How many people live there?
About a hundred and thirty million. Tenth most on Earth.
Then he picked up a toy car and turned it upside down, like a man inspecting a fish.
Why are you looking underneath?
Because that is where countries hide.
Then he laid out tomatoes, chillies, chocolate, vanilla, avocado and maize on the counter.
Every one of these was invented in the same country. Dinner owes it a letter.
On the globe, golden threads ran out of that country and crossed one long bright line.
And there was the line: a steel fence over empty hills, blazing into lit lanes where two cities met.

Charlie's question for this whole book: this country shares a 3,145-kilometre border with the biggest market on Earth. About a million people and well over two billion dollars of goods cross it every single day — and it is also the most argued-about line in the world. Being next door made it the United States' number-one trading partner. Being next door also cost it about half its territory in one war. What does it do to a nation to live beside a door that is also a wall?

CHAPTER 2 · PART ONE: ARRIVAL

Two Kilometres Above the Sea

The middle of the city was a stone square so big it had its own weather.
An engineer was waiting at the edge of it with a folding rule in her hand.
Are you my guide?
Lucia. I test cars. My grandmother tests maize.
The metro cost less than a sweet, and every station had its own little picture instead of a name.
The market was a wall of dried chillies, and there were more kinds than she could count.
Meadow was handed three small tacos and a wedge of lime and went completely quiet.
...I need a moment.
On the side of a public building, the whole country's story was painted forty feet high.
In the park the cypress trees were older than every building around them.
At one stall, wrestling masks hung in rows like silver and turquoise armour.
At night the street filled with food stalls, bulbs, and buckets of orange marigolds.
And at dawn, above the water tanks, two volcanoes. One of them was steaming.
Is that one AWAKE?
Always. We check on it like a neighbour.
WORTH REMEMBERING

This is the biggest city in North America — around 22 million people, sitting 2,240 metres above the sea, which is why a tropical city needs a jumper at night. Its metro carries roughly 4.5 million journeys on a working day. And this is the largest Spanish-speaking country on Earth, where 68 indigenous languages are also spoken by about seven million people.

Day one. 🌮 The tacos. I have no notes. Only respect. 🏔️ The city is TWO KILOMETRES UP — tropical latitude, springtime air, all year. A steaming volcano at the end of the street. 68 languages besides Spanish. Nobody warned me this place was FUN.

CHAPTER 3 · PART TWO: NATURE

A Country Standing On Its Toes

From the air the shape of the country made sudden sense: two mountain walls with a high floor between.
Lucia explained the trick of the place on a windy ridge.
We are as far south as the Sahara. And I need a cardigan.
Height. Every thousand metres up is a cooler country.
So high mountains here wear pine forests, and butterflies come from Canada to winter in them.
North of the middle, the rain simply stops, and the land is cactus and red gravel.
South of the middle, it does the opposite, and the forest drips.
In the flat limestone east there are almost no rivers at all — the water runs underground.
And the rivers there are sit at the bottom of canyons, no use to a boat whatsoever.
So no boats?
No boats. Everything here is carried uphill.
Which is why the country's proudest engineering is roads, and bridges over frightening gaps.
Meadow wrote down the hand, and it was a strange one.
Great soil. Perfect climate. Mountains in the way of everything.

Here is the hand. Only about 12% of the land can be ploughed. Two mountain ranges cut the country into pieces and there is no long navigable river tying it together — the opposite of the American plains next door. Worse, the water is in the wrong place: the north and centre hold about 77% of the people and 87% of the economy but only 31% of the water, while the wet south has most of the rain and a quarter of the people.

🏔️ Two mountain ranges, high plateau in the middle, NO river you can sail. America next door had rivers everywhere (Book 2!) — that's why they got rich early and this lot had to carry everything uphill. Switzerland had the same problem and became the best tunnel-builders on Earth. Mountains don't decide. They just charge you.

CHAPTER 4 · PART TWO: NATURE

Fire Underneath, Silver Inside

A line of volcanoes runs right across the middle of the country like a row of buttons.
They are there because a slab of sea floor is sliding underneath, melting as it goes.
Volcanoes grind themselves into the best soil in the country. That is the gift.
And they left something else. Lucia held out a grey lump and a small bright coin.
That rock is silver?
That rock paid for palaces on three continents.
Whole cities of pastel houses and gold-filled churches grew up inside ravines, on top of the seams.
And the silversmiths never stopped. The tools on that bench are five centuries old in design.
In the red volcanic soil nearby, another crop grows that the world knows by one word.
And the same heat that made the silver now spins turbines with its steam.

This has been the world's leading silver producer for most of five hundred years: about 6,400 tonnes a year, roughly a quarter of all the silver mined on Earth. Colonial mines here supplied a huge share of the world's silver — and the shaking has a cost as well as a gift, because that same sliding plate makes this one of the most earthquake-prone countries anywhere. The gift and the danger, again, are the same event.

🪙 STILL number one in silver after 500 YEARS. Same rock, same mountains. ⚠️ But the volcanoes and the silver and the earthquakes are ALL the same sliding plate. Bangladesh's flood brought the soil AND the danger. Here it's fire instead of water. Same deal.

CHAPTER 5 · PART THREE: HISTORY

The Chemistry in the Kitchen

In a museum, Lucia showed her a wild grass with about seven hard little seeds on it.
It grows in a hot dry valley, and nine thousand years ago somebody decided to be patient with it.
Then, in a kitchen, Lucia did the thing that Meadow decided was the cleverest trick in the book.
Why are you putting POWDER in it?
Burnt limestone. Watch what it does to the corn.
The alkaline water loosens the tough skin — and unlocks a vitamin the kernel was hiding.
Then it grinds into dough, and the dough becomes a flatbread you can genuinely live on.
And it is planted with beans and squash together: the beans feed the soil, the squash shades it.
Nobody threw away the old kinds, either. There are cobs here in colours Meadow had never imagined.

WORTH REMEMBERING

This is one of the great pieces of kitchen science in human history, and it is about 3,000 years old. Simmering maize with lime — the process is called nixtamalization — frees up the vitamin niacin, which raw maize locks away, and adds a large amount of calcium. When Europe and the American south later ate maize without this step, people fell ill in their thousands with a disease called pellagra. Mexico still grows around 27 million tonnes of maize a year and keeps roughly sixty native kinds alive in its fields.

CHAPTER 6 · PART THREE: HISTORY

The City on the Lake, and the First World Money

Long before anything Meadow had learned in school, there was a city here with pyramids at the end of its avenue.
In the jungle to the south, other cities did astronomy, wrote in pictures, and invented a symbol for zero.
Their books folded like a concertina, and were painted rather than printed.
Then Lucia showed her a map that made Meadow blink: a great city built on an island in a lake.
Where's the lake NOW?
You are standing on it. They drained it.
They farmed the lake itself, on rafts of black mud between canals, several harvests a year.
Fresh water came in by stone aqueduct, because a city of that size needs plumbing or nothing.
After 1521 the new rulers filled the lake in and built on it. The ground has been sulking ever since.
Then, for 250 years, ships carried the silver west across the Pacific from a port on this coast.
And the coin they carried became the first money the whole world would accept.
People in CHINA used these?
China, India, Africa, and the young United States.

A wild grass in the Balsas valley is bred, cob by cob, into maize.

WORTH REMEMBERING

Tenochtitlan in 1519 held perhaps 200,000 people — larger than any city in Europe at the time — fed partly by those lake gardens. And the silver coin minted here, the real de a ocho, was carried on the Manila galleons for 250 years and became the world's first truly global currency. It circulated in China, and it was still legal tender in the United States until 1857. The first thing the whole planet agreed on was a Mexican coin.

🏝️ There was a CITY ON A LAKE with 200,000 people and floating farms, and the new rulers drained the lake and built on the mud. (Netherlands: kept the water out. Here: kicked it out. It's still cross about it — see Ch 12.) 🪙 And the first world money was a coin from here. Not a bank. A COIN.

CHAPTER 7 · PART THREE: HISTORY

Half a Country, and Then a Revolution

In a quiet room hung an old map with one heavy line ruled straight across the top of it.
Independence in 1821 did not share out the land. A few families owned nearly all of it.
Railways came, and they were built to carry silver and cotton out, not people about.
So in 1910 the country turned itself over. It took ten years and cost more than anyone can count.
Charlie was on a bench in the empty avenue, with one finger up.
Nobody chooses their neighbours. What matters is what you do with them.
Out of the Revolution came land reform, a constitution, and thousands of small rural schools.
WORTH REMEMBERING

Two hard facts, stated once. In the war of 1846–48 this country lost roughly half its territory — around 1.3 million square kilometres — to its northern neighbour. And the Revolution of 1910–1920 cost somewhere between one and two million lives, most of them to hunger and disease. What came next was the 1917 constitution, land handed to villages, schools built in places that had never had one, and in 1938 the oil taken into national hands. Then, from 1940 to 1970, the economy grew about 6% a year for thirty years.

🗺️ They lost HALF THE COUNTRY in one war. Then a revolution that cost 1-2 million lives. Then thirty years of 6% growth. ⚠️ And the oil got spent, not saved. Norway put its oil in a jar for its great-grandchildren (Book 16). Almost nobody else did. That choice is EVERYTHING.

CHAPTER 8 · PART FOUR: SCIENCE MEETS SOCIETY

The Wheat That Fed India

In 1944, on a hot dry plain in the north-west, someone began planting wheat in hundreds of tiny plots.
Lucia held up two stalks together, and the problem was obvious.
The tall one keeps falling over!
Exactly. Feed it more and it falls faster. Useless.
So they bred a short, thick-stemmed wheat that could carry a huge head and stay standing.
And they cheated time: one crop a year in the cool highlands, another in the hot lowlands. Two harvests, half the wait.
Every line was kept, labelled and stored — the seed library is still here, still cold, still shared.
Mexican wheat harvests tripled. By 1956 the country grew all the wheat it ate.
And then the crates went to the airfield, addressed to countries with a much bigger problem.
Where to?
India. Pakistan. Sixty-six million people were about to be hungry.

This is the quietest world-changing thing in the whole series. The wheat programme in Sonora, and the centre it became (CIMMYT), bred short-stemmed high-yield wheat and shipped it to South Asia in 1965–66. India's wheat harvest went from about 12 million tonnes in 1965 to over 20 million by 1970, and past 100 million today. The plant breeder who led it, Norman Borlaug, won the 1970 Nobel Peace Prize, and is credited with saving hundreds of millions of lives. A famine that everybody predicted simply did not happen — because of seeds bred in Mexico.

🌾 SHORT WHEAT. That's it. Tall wheat falls over when you feed it; short wheat carries the weight. Bred HERE, in Mexico, then flown to India — and the famine everyone was predicting never happened. Nobel Peace Prize for a PLANT BREEDER. ➡️ And I'm going to India next. I'll look for these seeds.

CHAPTER 9 · PART FOUR: SCIENCE MEETS SOCIETY

Sixty Seconds

In the city there are small swept gardens where a building used to be. This one has a plain stone in it.
Nobody waited for permission in 1985. Ordinary people brought gloves, rope and torches and dug for days.
Then Lucia pointed at a small loudspeaker on the wall and counted on her fingers.
One... two... three...
That is how long you get. Sixty seconds. Sometimes ninety.
The trick is simple physics: the earthquake starts far away, and radio is much faster than shaking.
So sensors sit on the coast where the quakes begin, watching for the first tremor.
And thousands of loudspeakers in the city do the shouting, about a minute before the ground arrives.
And every single year, on the same date, the whole country practises leaving the building calmly.
On 19 September 2017 the alarm sounded for real — two hours after that year's drill.
The SAME DATE?
The same date. We had rehearsed that morning.

The earthquake of 19 September 1985 was magnitude 8.0 and killed at least 10,000 people. Out of it came two things. Citizens who organised their own rescue brigades and then refused to stop asking questions — and, in 1991, the world's first public earthquake early-warning system. It works because the big quakes start about 300 km away out under the coast: the radio signal travels at the speed of light, the shaking at a few kilometres a second, so the city gets 60 to 90 seconds. Enough to stop a lift, shut a gas valve, and empty a classroom.

⏱️ THE WORLD'S FIRST EARTHQUAKE ALARM — because radio beats shaking to the city by about a minute. Sensors on the coast, thousands of speakers in town, and EVERYONE practises every 19 September. 1985 was the worst day; the alarm is what they built out of it. Bangladesh did exactly this with cyclones. Disaster → rules → almost nobody dies.

And then, at last, the thing that was underneath the toy car: a hall the length of a village.
Lucia handed Meadow a bundle of wires and showed her where it clipped in.
This is a car's nervous system.
And somebody threads it by hand. Try.
Before dawn the trucks were already queuing on the bridge, nose to tail, for hours.
Because a part is not made once and sent. It crosses the line several times before it is a car.
Back and FORTH?
Wire here, moulding there, assembled here. Same day.

Rails run north stacked two containers high, and south with steel and grain.
In one high city they now build aeroplane parts — wings, fuselage sections, engines.
Near the border, clean rooms turn out flat screens by the million.
And on the Pacific, cranes load cars for Asia. Two oceans is a useful thing to own.
None of it works without this room: technical schools next door to the plants, turning out engineers.

The numbers are extraordinary. In 2023 Mexico became the United States' largest trading partner, with around $800 billion of goods crossing the border — well over two billion dollars a day, plus about a million people. Mexico builds roughly 4 million vehicles a year (seventh in the world) and exports about three quarters of them north. Aerospace exports top $9 billion. And it works because the country graduates more than 100,000 engineers a year. Nearness is geography; engineers are a decision.

CHAPTER 11 · PART FOUR: SCIENCE MEETS SOCIETY

Money That Walks Home

On a kitchen table: a phone, a little paper slip, and a tin with its lid off.
Which becomes a second storey, and a water tank, and a floor that isn't earth.
And it becomes school laptops in a village that the map barely bothers with.
Meanwhile the coasts do their own quiet work: this is one of the ten most visited countries on Earth.
And the pyramids pay their way too, every single day, in ten languages.
On the volcanic terraces, the fruit that conquered the world's breakfast.
And under plastic, berries and tomatoes for winter tables three thousand kilometres north.
WORTH REMEMBERING

Mexicans living abroad sent home $63.3 billion in 2023 — mostly in tiny transfers averaging around $390. That is more than the country earns from oil and from all its tourists put together, and it goes straight to kitchen tables, not governments. Meanwhile about 42 million visitors came, and roughly four out of five avocados eaten in the United States grew here. One more fact people rarely hear: for more than a decade, about as many Mexicans have moved home as have left.

💸 $63 BILLION sent home in tiny amounts by people working far away — more than oil AND tourism together. It skips the government and lands on the kitchen table. 🥑 Four out of five American avocados are from here. AND: roughly as many people move home as leave now. Nobody told me that part.

CHAPTER 12 · THE BIG PICTURE

What Could Close the Door

The old lake has not forgiven anyone. In places the pavement dips and doorways sit below the street.
And a city two kilometres up, drinking from underneath itself, runs short in a dry year.
And Lucia took her to a plaza with a plain stone in it, and did not skip the hardest fact in the book.
On a low wall she said it straight out.
Thirty thousand lives a year, for years, to organised crime.
And we are rebuilding courts, police and trust. Slowly.
From up there Meadow could see the whole chain at once: volcano, maize, mine, factory, road north.

Read the chain slowly. Mountains cut the land and gave it no river, so people bred maize and invented the chemistry to live on it; great cities rose on a high lake plateau; silver from the volcanoes became the first world money; a war and a border left half the land on the other side; wheat bred here went on to feed India; and nearness to the biggest market on Earth turned into engineers, factories and four million cars a year. Every single step was a decision made on top of a piece of geography.

Charlie was on the wall at the top, tapping his glasses, as if he had been waiting there all along.
He turned the toy car over and over. “Don't ask what made this country a workshop,” he said. “Ask what could shut it down.”
The door closing. And not being able to trust the law.
Good. One customer is the potato problem again, in cars.

⚠️ THE CRACKS: the capital is SINKING up to 50cm a year in places and drinking its own aquifer dry · about 80% of exports go to ONE customer (Bangladesh's t-shirt problem, Ireland's potato problem — AGAIN) · over half of all workers are outside the tax and pension system · and ~30,000 lives a year to organised crime. Charlie: what would shut it down? Losing trust. Estonia said exactly the same thing.

CHAPTER 13 · WHAT LASTS · COMING HOME

A Door Is Worth More Than a Wall

In a small courtyard at golden hour, on a painted bench under a lemon tree, sat a familiar old man.
“Look at Charlie,” he chuckled. “Spins a globe, turns a toy car upside down, then has a nap.”
He made me look UNDERNEATH it!
He always does something. Then he vanishes.
Then, quietly: “He asked what it does to a country to live beside a door that is also a wall.”
They made things the neighbour needed. And kept their own kitchen.
And what will you keep, when it's yours?

Maize, beans, tomato, chilli, cacao, vanilla, avocado and turkey were all domesticated here, and about sixty native kinds of maize are still grown in Mexican fields — along with the lime-cooking chemistry that makes maize nourishing. No rival can copy nine thousand years of patience.

At home, twenty-four souvenirs sat in rows, each with a thread of light running out of it.

Nothing is ever just one cause — and nothing on your desk is just a thing.

Japan had nothing. America had everything. An island had a doorway. A continent had the ground. Nepal had height. Switzerland had empty mountains. A peninsula had only its people. A delta had no ground at all. A dry country kept its head. A green island called its children home. One sent its soldiers away. One changed a single rule and fed the world. One sold the machines that build the factories. One built itself out of code. One was given up on and quietly did the fastest good in history. One saved its oil for its great-grandchildren instead of spending it. And others besides — coasts turned into shipping lanes, deserts into gardens, sand into glass, cold rock into power, forest into medicine, old cities into laboratories.
