A curious traveller, two wise mentors, and a mountainous country of a hundred and thirty million people that invented the food half the world eats for dinner, minted the first money the whole planet accepted, bred the wheat that fed India — and now builds four million cars a year, thirty kilometres from the richest customer on Earth.










Charlie's question for this whole book: this country shares a 3,145-kilometre border with the biggest market on Earth. About a million people and well over two billion dollars of goods cross it every single day — and it is also the most argued-about line in the world. Being next door made it the United States' number-one trading partner. Being next door also cost it about half its territory in one war. What does it do to a nation to live beside a door that is also a wall?

This is the biggest city in North America — around 22 million people, sitting 2,240 metres above the sea, which is why a tropical city needs a jumper at night. Its metro carries roughly 4.5 million journeys on a working day. And this is the largest Spanish-speaking country on Earth, where 68 indigenous languages are also spoken by about seven million people.
Day one. 🌮 The tacos. I have no notes. Only respect. 🏔️ The city is TWO KILOMETRES UP — tropical latitude, springtime air, all year. A steaming volcano at the end of the street. 68 languages besides Spanish. Nobody warned me this place was FUN.









Here is the hand. Only about 12% of the land can be ploughed. Two mountain ranges cut the country into pieces and there is no long navigable river tying it together — the opposite of the American plains next door. Worse, the water is in the wrong place: the north and centre hold about 77% of the people and 87% of the economy but only 31% of the water, while the wet south has most of the rain and a quarter of the people.
🏔️ Two mountain ranges, high plateau in the middle, NO river you can sail. America next door had rivers everywhere (Book 2!) — that's why they got rich early and this lot had to carry everything uphill. Switzerland had the same problem and became the best tunnel-builders on Earth. Mountains don't decide. They just charge you.








This has been the world's leading silver producer for most of five hundred years: about 6,400 tonnes a year, roughly a quarter of all the silver mined on Earth. Colonial mines here supplied a huge share of the world's silver — and the shaking has a cost as well as a gift, because that same sliding plate makes this one of the most earthquake-prone countries anywhere. The gift and the danger, again, are the same event.
🪙 STILL number one in silver after 500 YEARS. Same rock, same mountains. ⚠️ But the volcanoes and the silver and the earthquakes are ALL the same sliding plate. Bangladesh's flood brought the soil AND the danger. Here it's fire instead of water. Same deal.







This is one of the great pieces of kitchen science in human history, and it is about 3,000 years old. Simmering maize with lime — the process is called nixtamalization — frees up the vitamin niacin, which raw maize locks away, and adds a large amount of calcium. When Europe and the American south later ate maize without this step, people fell ill in their thousands with a disease called pellagra. Mexico still grows around 27 million tonnes of maize a year and keeps roughly sixty native kinds alive in its fields.
🌽 THE BEST FACT SO FAR. Cook corn with LIME (burnt limestone!) and it unlocks a vitamin + adds calcium. Invented ~3,000 years ago. Other countries copied the corn and NOT the chemistry, and people got sick. 🤯 You can't just copy the plant. You have to copy the KNOWING.

Tenochtitlan in 1519 held perhaps 200,000 people — larger than any city in Europe at the time — fed partly by those lake gardens. And the silver coin minted here, the real de a ocho, was carried on the Manila galleons for 250 years and became the world's first truly global currency. It circulated in China, and it was still legal tender in the United States until 1857. The first thing the whole planet agreed on was a Mexican coin.
🏝️ There was a CITY ON A LAKE with 200,000 people and floating farms, and the new rulers drained the lake and built on the mud. (Netherlands: kept the water out. Here: kicked it out. It's still cross about it — see Ch 12.) 🪙 And the first world money was a coin from here. Not a bank. A COIN.






Two hard facts, stated once. In the war of 1846–48 this country lost roughly half its territory — around 1.3 million square kilometres — to its northern neighbour. And the Revolution of 1910–1920 cost somewhere between one and two million lives, most of them to hunger and disease. What came next was the 1917 constitution, land handed to villages, schools built in places that had never had one, and in 1938 the oil taken into national hands. Then, from 1940 to 1970, the economy grew about 6% a year for thirty years.
🗺️ They lost HALF THE COUNTRY in one war. Then a revolution that cost 1-2 million lives. Then thirty years of 6% growth. ⚠️ And the oil got spent, not saved. Norway put its oil in a jar for its great-grandchildren (Book 16). Almost nobody else did. That choice is EVERYTHING.







This is the quietest world-changing thing in the whole series. The wheat programme in Sonora, and the centre it became (CIMMYT), bred short-stemmed high-yield wheat and shipped it to South Asia in 1965–66. India's wheat harvest went from about 12 million tonnes in 1965 to over 20 million by 1970, and past 100 million today. The plant breeder who led it, Norman Borlaug, won the 1970 Nobel Peace Prize, and is credited with saving hundreds of millions of lives. A famine that everybody predicted simply did not happen — because of seeds bred in Mexico.
🌾 SHORT WHEAT. That's it. Tall wheat falls over when you feed it; short wheat carries the weight. Bred HERE, in Mexico, then flown to India — and the famine everyone was predicting never happened. Nobel Peace Prize for a PLANT BREEDER. ➡️ And I'm going to India next. I'll look for these seeds.








The earthquake of 19 September 1985 was magnitude 8.0 and killed at least 10,000 people. Out of it came two things. Citizens who organised their own rescue brigades and then refused to stop asking questions — and, in 1991, the world's first public earthquake early-warning system. It works because the big quakes start about 300 km away out under the coast: the radio signal travels at the speed of light, the shaking at a few kilometres a second, so the city gets 60 to 90 seconds. Enough to stop a lift, shut a gas valve, and empty a classroom.
⏱️ THE WORLD'S FIRST EARTHQUAKE ALARM — because radio beats shaking to the city by about a minute. Sensors on the coast, thousands of speakers in town, and EVERYONE practises every 19 September. 1985 was the worst day; the alarm is what they built out of it. Bangladesh did exactly this with cyclones. Disaster → rules → almost nobody dies.









The numbers are extraordinary. In 2023 Mexico became the United States' largest trading partner, with around $800 billion of goods crossing the border — well over two billion dollars a day, plus about a million people. Mexico builds roughly 4 million vehicles a year (seventh in the world) and exports about three quarters of them north. Aerospace exports top $9 billion. And it works because the country graduates more than 100,000 engineers a year. Nearness is geography; engineers are a decision.
🚗 4 MILLION CARS A YEAR. And a part crosses the border SEVERAL TIMES before it's finished — the two countries build one car together. Japan invented just-in-time (Book 1); this is just-in-time with a border in the middle, which only works if the door stays open. 🎓 100,000+ engineers a year. Being close is luck. Being ready is not.







Mexicans living abroad sent home $63.3 billion in 2023 — mostly in tiny transfers averaging around $390. That is more than the country earns from oil and from all its tourists put together, and it goes straight to kitchen tables, not governments. Meanwhile about 42 million visitors came, and roughly four out of five avocados eaten in the United States grew here. One more fact people rarely hear: for more than a decade, about as many Mexicans have moved home as have left.
💸 $63 BILLION sent home in tiny amounts by people working far away — more than oil AND tourism together. It skips the government and lands on the kitchen table. 🥑 Four out of five American avocados are from here. AND: roughly as many people move home as leave now. Nobody told me that part.





Read the chain slowly. Mountains cut the land and gave it no river, so people bred maize and invented the chemistry to live on it; great cities rose on a high lake plateau; silver from the volcanoes became the first world money; a war and a border left half the land on the other side; wheat bred here went on to feed India; and nearness to the biggest market on Earth turned into engineers, factories and four million cars a year. Every single step was a decision made on top of a piece of geography.


⚠️ THE CRACKS: the capital is SINKING up to 50cm a year in places and drinking its own aquifer dry · about 80% of exports go to ONE customer (Bangladesh's t-shirt problem, Ireland's potato problem — AGAIN) · over half of all workers are outside the tax and pension system · and ~30,000 lives a year to organised crime. Charlie: what would shut it down? Losing trust. Estonia said exactly the same thing.



Maize, beans, tomato, chilli, cacao, vanilla, avocado and turkey were all domesticated here, and about sixty native kinds of maize are still grown in Mexican fields — along with the lime-cooking chemistry that makes maize nourishing. No rival can copy nine thousand years of patience.
A 3,145 km border with the world's richest customer, ports on two oceans, rail heading north and the same working hours. Geography that no competitor can relocate.
Technical universities built next door to the plants. That is why the work moved from stitching to wiring to whole cars and aeroplane wings — and why it keeps moving up.

About four of every five export dollars come from a single neighbour — the potato problem in cars. The capital sinks as it drains its own aquifer, over half of all workers are outside the tax and pension system, and for years organised crime has cost tens of thousands of lives. Geography fixes none of that. Trust and courts do.





No president built this country and no factory did it alone. Volcanic soil, a wild grass, a spoonful of burnt limestone, a lake city, a silver coin that circled the planet, short-stemmed wheat on a hot plain, sixty seconds of radio warning, a hundred thousand engineers and a million trucks a year all leaned on each other. Nothing is ever just one cause — and nothing on your desk is just a thing.

A chain. Again.

Japan had nothing. America had everything. An island had a doorway. A continent had the ground. Nepal had height. Switzerland had empty mountains. A peninsula had only its people. A delta had no ground at all. A dry country kept its head. A green island called its children home. One sent its soldiers away. One changed a single rule and fed the world. One sold the machines that build the factories. One built itself out of code. One was given up on and quietly did the fastest good in history. One saved its oil for its great-grandchildren instead of spending it. And others besides — coasts turned into shipping lanes, deserts into gardens, sand into glass, cold rock into power, forest into medicine, old cities into laboratories. And this one lived next door to the biggest market on Earth and learned that a door and a wall can be the same line. But the seeds that went out of Mexico in 1965 landed somewhere enormous — and that is where the compass swings last. To a country that is really many countries: more than a billion four hundred million people, twenty-two official languages, mountains, monsoon and a plateau of ancient rock; a place that once waited years for a telephone line and then skipped the wires altogether, put the internet in a billion pockets, sent a spacecraft to Mars for less than the cost of a film about going to Mars, and now writes software for half the planet before breakfast. How does a country that is many countries hold together — and how do you leapfrog from the post office straight to the future?
