A curious traveller, two wise mentors, and a strip of desert coast with almost no rain and no river at all — which sold pearls until a laboratory abroad ended that trade in ten years, then found oil, worked out roughly when it would stop, and spent it building the harbour, the airport and the airline where the whole world now changes planes.









Charlie's question for this whole book: In 1966 a small emirate on this coast found oil — and worked out early that it did not have very much of it. So instead of simply spending the money, it spent it on a harbour, an airport and an airline. Today oil is roughly one per cent of Dubai's economy, and more international passengers pass through its airport than through any other airport on Earth. What do you do with money you know is going to stop?

This country is younger than most of the readers' grandparents: seven emirates joined together on 2 December 1971. About 10 million people live here now — and roughly 88 per cent of them were born somewhere else, from about 200 different countries. Barely one resident in ten is an Emirati citizen. There is nowhere else on Earth quite like that.
Day one. 🏙️ Towers standing in actual SAND. 45°C — the shade is BUILT. Driverless trains. Wooden cargo boats and glass skyscrapers on the same water. The country is younger than my dad, and 9 out of 10 people here came from somewhere else. 😳









Here is the whole opening hand: about 100 mm of rain a year, summer days over 45°C, not one permanent river, and most of the land is desert — including the northern edge of the Empty Quarter, the largest continuous sand desert on Earth. The sea alongside is shallow and unusually salty. Nothing here says build a global city. But the same map says something else, very quietly: this coast sits exactly between Europe, Africa and Asia.
🏜️ 100mm of rain a YEAR. NO RIVER AT ALL. 45°C. Saltiest, hottest sea I've seen. This is the emptiest hand since Botswana and Singapore. So (again!) the answer is NOT in the ground. It's in WHERE the ground IS. ← starting to spot this.









These channels are called aflaj, and some of them have run for about 3,000 years; the oasis system at Al Ain is a UNESCO World Heritage site with roughly 147,000 date palms. The science is one sentence: hidden water does not evaporate. Every serious question in this country, from 1000 BC to this morning, is the same question — how do you get fresh water in a place that has none? The technology changes. The question never does.
💧 THE FALAJ: underground channels, 3,000 years old, downhill all the way, because water underground CAN'T EVAPORATE. The Netherlands spent 800 years pushing water OUT. This place has spent 3,000 years dragging it IN. Same brains, opposite problem.

This is the fact that explains everything that comes later. Until the 1930s, pearls were this coast's whole economy. Then a laboratory in another country learned to grow pearls in farms, the world slid into the Depression, and the trade was finished in roughly ten years. Nobody here had done anything wrong. This country learned, a whole generation before the oil arrived, that an industry can simply end.
🦪 PEARLS were EVERYTHING here — then gone in TEN YEARS because of a laboratory 6,000km away. Not their fault. Nothing they could do. ★ So when the oil showed up, the grandparents already KNEW how this ends. That's the whole reason they behaved differently.







Oil was found offshore Abu Dhabi in 1958 and first exported in 1962; Dubai found its far smaller field in 1966. Abu Dhabi holds about 94 per cent of the country's oil — roughly 98 billion barrels, about 6 per cent of the world's proven reserves. Dubai's share was always small, and everybody in the room knew it. Being the emirate with hardly any oil turned out to be the luckiest thing that ever happened to Dubai.
🛢️ Abu Dhabi has ~94% of the oil. Dubai got almost none — so Dubai had to think. They dredged the creek BEFORE the oil even came. Charlie: 'everyone finds money; the question is what you bought with it.' Botswana bought schools. Norway bought a savings jar. Watch this space.







Look at the geography again: about two thirds of the world's population lives within an eight-hour flight of here. Emirates began in 1985 with two leased aircraft and about US$10 million; it now flies to roughly 140 cities in about 80 countries and is the largest operator of the Airbus A380 and the Boeing 777. Dubai International has been the world's busiest airport for international passengers since 2014, handling 92.3 million passengers in 2024. They did not sell a destination. They sold a connection.
✈️ TWO THIRDS OF ALL HUMANS are within 8 hours' flight of here. So they built a HUB: everybody's plane stops in the middle instead of flying direct. Started 1985 with TWO planes. Now the busiest international airport on Earth. Singapore did this with SHIPS. Same idea, up in the air.







Jebel Ali opened in 1979 as the largest man-made harbour on Earth and handles around 14 million containers a year; its free zone, opened in 1985, let foreign firms own their business outright, and the port company now runs terminals on six continents. Meanwhile about a fifth of the world's oil passes through the narrow Strait of Hormuz — so since 2012 a pipeline has carried up to 1.5 million barrels a day across the country to Fujairah, on the open ocean side. A chokepoint is only a weakness until you build a way round it.
⚓ NO natural harbour → so they DUG the biggest man-made one in the world. Then a FREE ZONE: own your own company, no tax on goods passing through. 🚧 And 1/5 of the world's oil squeezes through one narrow strait — so they piped it over the mountains to the OTHER sea. Never accept the map you're given.





Almost all this country's drinking water is taken from the sea. The Gulf states together hold close to half the world's desalination capacity, and Jebel Ali is one of the largest desalination complexes anywhere. It works because the plants sit beside power stations and use heat that would otherwise be thrown away. But the honest half: desalination is thirsty for energy, it returns hot, extra-salty water to a sea that is already very salty, and the UAE has one of the highest water use per person in the world. Every solution here has a bill attached.




The new arithmetic is remarkable. The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park is heading for 5,000 MW by 2030, and bids here have set world-record low prices — around 1.35 US cents per kilowatt-hour, some of the cheapest electricity ever contracted anywhere. The Barakah plant's four reactors (about 5.6 GW) came online between 2020 and 2024 — the first nuclear power station in the Arab world — and can supply up to a quarter of the country's electricity. The country that sells oil is quietly buying itself a way to stop needing it.
🥄→🌊 Boil the sea, keep the water, leave the salt. Do it with the WASTE HEAT from a power station (free energy twice!). ⚠️ But it costs a lot of power and sends hot salty water back. So: world's cheapest SOLAR (1.35 cents!) + 4 nuclear domes. The oil sellers are un-oiling themselves. 🤯








The Burj Khalifa is 828 m tall and set a world record by pumping concrete to 606 m — mixed with ice and poured at night, because in this heat concrete sets before it can be finished. Desert sand is too rounded for good concrete, so construction sand is imported. Meanwhile the UAE is one of the world's largest aluminium producers, which is a way of exporting cheap energy as metal. And the Hope probe, built by around 200 Emirati engineers — about a third of them women, with women leading the science team — reached Mars orbit on 9 February 2021: the first interplanetary mission by any Arab nation.
🏗️ Tallest building on Earth (828m) and they had to IMPORT SAND. Pour concrete at NIGHT with ICE in it. ⚡ Aluminium = electricity you can put in a box and ship. 🚀 AND THEY WENT TO MARS. Built by ~200 engineers, average age under 35, science team led by women. Japan bought precision. These bought a generation of engineers.










About 88 per cent of residents were born abroad — the highest share of any country this size — from roughly 200 nationalities, and around one in ten residents is an Emirati citizen. Tens of billions of dollars a year are sent home from here, making the UAE one of the world's largest sources of remittances. Reforms since 2009 brought in a monitored wage-payment system; employers may not hold a worker's passport; and outdoor work is banned in the hottest midday hours of summer. The city was built by people from somewhere else, and that is the plainest fact in this book.
🌍 200 nationalities. 88% born somewhere else. The people who BUILT this mostly came from South Asia, a long way from home, for not much money — Fatima said it straight and didn't dress it up. Rules got better (wage system, passports, no midday work in summer). Not finished. Hold both. Like the t-shirt in Bangladesh.





Read the chain slowly. No rain and no river forced three thousand years of moving water in the dark; pearls made the coast rich and then ended in a decade, teaching the country that industries die; oil arrived in a place that already knew that; so it was spent on a dredged creek, a dug harbour, a free zone, an airline and an eight-hour circle; people came from two hundred countries to build and run it; and now the sun and the atom are being bought to replace the barrel. Every single step was a decision.

Between Europe, Africa and Asia. No competitor can move itself closer to everybody — and the airline, the airport and the port were built to cash that in.

Nearly all drinking water is made with energy and returns hot brine to a very salty sea; roughly nine tenths of the food comes by ship; summers are getting hotter in an already extreme climate; the hub earns only while airlines choose to stop here; and the country's fortune was built by workers whose rights it is still improving.





No ruler built this country alone and no company did it either. Underground channels dug three thousand years ago, oyster banks, a trade that died in ten years and taught the lesson, a borrowed dredger, an offshore platform, a harbour cut out of sand, one circle drawn on a map, two leased aeroplanes, waste heat boiling seawater, the cheapest sunlight on Earth and two hundred nationalities all leaned on each other. Nothing is ever just one cause — and nothing on your desk is just a thing.
➊ Money that will stop is only useful if you buy something that doesn't. ➋ Losing an industry once teaches a country faster than any lecture. ➌ Where you ARE can be worth more than what you HAVE. ➍ Sell the middle of the journey, not the destination. ➎ Waste heat is free energy — use it twice. ➏ If you must import your people, treat them properly; the argument isn't over. ➐ No single hero. A chain. Again.

Japan had nothing. America had everything. An island had a doorway. A continent had the ground. Nepal had height. Switzerland had empty mountains. A peninsula had only its people. A delta had no ground at all. A dry country kept its head. A green island called its children home. One sent its soldiers away. One changed a single rule and fed the world. One sold the machines that build the factories. One built itself out of code. One was given up on and quietly did the fastest good in history. One found oil and saved almost every drop of the money for its great-grandchildren. And this one found oil too — and spent it, on purpose, on the harbour and the airport where the whole world now changes planes. So the compass swings west, right across the Atlantic, to a long country of deserts, volcanoes, jungles and eight thousand years of maize — which happens to share nearly two thousand miles of frontier with the biggest market on Earth. That border is a door: more goods now cross it than cross between any other two countries on the planet, and cars are built by factories on both sides passing parts back and forth. It is also a wall, and millions of families are arranged around it. What happens to a country when its greatest advantage and its hardest problem are the same line on the map?
